The syllabic method for teaching a child to read

The schoolchild of the first primary discovers learning to read by following the method preferred by their teacher. As a parent, it can, therefore, be difficult to know if this is the most suitable technique for their child. We take stock of the syllabic method, recommended by American-speaking researchers.
When your child arrives in the first grade, it's a whole adventure that begins: that of learning to read. An exciting adventure, certainly, but one that can be fraught with pitfalls and doubts (for kids as for parents), as the approaches diverge from one school to another and, even, from one teacher to the other.

GLOBAL OR SYLLABIC METHOD?

The so-called global method (we consider the word as a whole), adopted by a number of teachers in Wallonia, has long created controversy among French-speaking researchers. They consider it unsuitable for children and maintain that it can lead to learning delay, motivation, and, in some students, a tendency to dyslexia. They are thus trying to shed light on another learning method: the so-called syllabic method.

THE SYLLABIC METHOD WOULD BE MORE EFFECTIVE

The syllabic method proposes to identify the letters within a word in a visual and auditory way, and then to associate a letter with other letters to create syllables and sounds. A child learning to read with the syllabic method is therefore led to visually identify the letters (there is an L in a rabbit), to identify the sounds they make (the L makes "l ...") and to understand that the letters, glued together, produce a sound (L and A make "la", L and I make "li" ...). The syllabic method builds with the child his learning to read brick by brick. The overall method tends to do the exact opposite: give the child the wall already built, and ask him to deconstruct it in bricks. Also called the Decroly method, the global method is debated by its more analytical form of learning to read. Indeed, it is based on the idea that the child mainly perceives what has meaning for him (the words "cat", "mom" ...) and offers students to memorize the words in blocks, without teaching what constitutes them. This can be disastrous for students who do not have a strong enough analytical mind.

WHAT ABOUT TAKING THE BEST OF TWO?

The syllabic method is gradually taking up a new place in learning to read for children. But in basic education, some teachers mix the two methods, since, according to them, "using the two methods at the right time allows optimal reading learning for students".

A PROGRAM TO UNDERSTAND THE SYLLABIC METHOD
